Apple Crumb Pie
The crumb topping, simplicity, textural contrast, and adaptability are what make apple crumb pie unique and a favorite dessert option. We paired ours with vanilla bean ice cream. Delicious warm from the oven or right out of the refrigerator.
Apple Crumb Pie

- 1 pie crust, frozen or homemade
Topping
- 1 cup all purpose flour
- ½ cup brown sugar packed
- ½ cup white sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- ½ cup butter chilled and cubed
Filling
- 6-7 cups peeled and sliced apples we used Empire
- ⅓ cup white sugar
- 3 tbsp all purpose flour
- ½ tbsp lemon juice
- ½ tsp lemon zest optional
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 450 degrees F
- Combine all topping ingredients using a fork until completely mixed and crumbly. Mix in butter until it is coarse and not powdery.
- Layer apple slices in pie shell. It should be very full.
- Top apple slices with topping and pat it down over the apples. Place pie pan on a cookie sheet to save your oven from overflow.
- Bake at 450°F for 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 350°F and bake an additional 45-55 minutes. Apples should be tender.
- Serve warm, room temperature, or chilled!
